Fishin’ with the Puckett Boys is comical to me because growing up with our last name is an adventure in itself, let alone all the characters that I have enjoyed fishing with. If you haven’t heard of this last name, you’re probably not from the South. The name Puckett is about as southern as it gets. But the problem with our name comes from all the similar names it rhymes with and/or sounds like. Let your imagination go for a minute, simply take off the “P” and start at the beginning of the alphabet substituting consonants. Buckett would be first, and then Cuckett, Duckett, and you don’t have to go far until it really gets interesting. Kids, especially high school kids, really enjoy the different applications of our last name. It was truly fun growing up as a boy or girl with Puckett as your last name.

According to my research, the name Puckett is of German and Scottish derivation. The translation is funny in the fact that it means “little gobblin”, which we address later in the book. But on the bright side, one of our claims to fame is the rock and roll band of the sixties, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. They had a few hits and overcame the adversity of our last name. If you’re a little bit older, you may remember the seventies classic movie, “North Dallas Forty.” Burt Reynolds played a renegade, pro-football player named Billy Clyde Puckett. he was handsome, good-looking, always got the girl, and made all us Puckett’s proud. Although most Puckett’s are white, southern, red-neck, we do celebrate and boast about he greatest Minnesota Twin, Kirby Puckett.

The name Puckett also is constantly pronounced differently around the world. In France it is pronounced “pu che”, the t’s become silent similar to Chevrolet. If you happen to be a doctor in the Philippines, our name would be pronounced “pu chet”. I hope through all this insanity you now understand our last name is a blessing, a curse, and a lot of fun all wrapped up in the “Puckett.” If you can laugh at yourself, life is so much more fun! No it’s time to go “Fishin’ with the Puckett boys.”
